New Racing Entertainment Centres

Racing Entertainment Centre Information:
AGLC

The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission has developed Racing Entertainment Centre licensing policies in response to policy direction made from the Gaming Licensing Policy Review.

In 1996, the government established Horse Racing Alberta (formally the Alberta Racing Corporation) as an independent non-profit organization to govern and promote horse racing in Alberta. Government also approved the Racing Industry Renewal Initiative (RIRI) which allowed the racing industry to receive a portion of the revenue generated by slot machines in racing entertainment centres (RECs).

The following link highlights the key points of the policies:

Racing Entertainment Centres (REC) have been developed to help the horse racing industry in Alberta compete in today’s gaming environment. Revenue from REC slot machines is disbursed to the horse breeding and racing industry in Alberta as well as various community-focused initiatives through the Alberta Lottery Fund.

Horse Racing Alberta (HRA) is responsible for licensing Horse Racing tracks, and the AGLC is responsible for licensing RECs.
