Based on a successful pilot project launched by the AGLC working in consultation with AADAC in February 2006, Responsible Gambling Information Centres (RGICs) have opened in six Alberta casinos: Edmonton's Palace Casino and Century Casino; Calgary's Stampede Casino and Deerfoot Inn and Casino; the Enoch River Cree Resort & Casino and the Camrose Resort Casino. Two more casinos – Casino Dene in Cold Lake and Grey Eagle Casino in Calgary – are preparing to open their RGICs before the end of the year, with all casinos in the province to feature RGICs by 2009.
These in-casino centres provide gamblers with information about the cost of play, house advantage and the Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program. Each RGIC is staffed by a representative, who will assist gamblers with referrals to treatment and provide information and assistance with enrolment in the Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program (VSE). The RGIC reps help VSE clients stay on-track with the obligations of their VSE agreements. If and when lapses occur, the RGIC reps will talk with the VSE clients and together, focus on the problem behaviour and work to reinforce the VSE agreement. RGIC reps also assist and educate casino staff with the identification and monitoring of problem gamblers.
