Under 25 Initiative
The AGLC takes the issue of minors trying to obtain liquor very seriously. The Under 25 ID policy is an effective way to reduce or eliminate situations where those under 18 are not asked for ID and are able to purchase liquor.
In order to raise awareness of this policy among licensees and Albertans, the AGLC has the “Hard to Tell - Have to Ask” campaign. The campaign consists of posters and brochures that are sent to all liquor licensees, and advertisements placed in newspapers throughout Alberta.
In 2002, only 23% of licensees were complying with the policy. An audit of the Under 25 ID policy in 2003 showed 67% of licensees were complying with the policy, a significant improvement in one year. The percentage of licensees asking for identification in compliance with this policy has increased over time. In 2007, 81% of licensees requested identification in compliance with this policy.
The AGLC will continue to work with our industry partners to ensure there is compliance with this policy to help prevent minors from obtaining liquor and/or entering licensed premises. However, it is the responsibility of every individual in the liquor business to ensure minors are not being served liquor.
